Teeth Whitening

What is teeth whitening (bleaching)?

Just as the shape of our teeth is important for a beautiful, healthy, and aesthetic smile, their color is equally important, if not more so. White and healthy teeth create an aesthetic smile, increasing a person's self-confidence. Teeth whitening is often seen as the first step in smile design.

There are many factors that affect the color of our teeth. As we age, our teeth naturally become more yellow and darker in color.

Sometimes, the use of antibiotics at a young age or previous restorations can also cause changes in the color of our teeth. However, what we eat and drink, our dietary habits, smoking, and inadequate dental care (lack of brushing) are the most significant factors that determine the color of our teeth.

Identifying how much and why the teeth have changed color is the first step in teeth whitening treatment. It is possible to make patients' teeth whiter using appropriate teeth whitening techniques.

Who can undergo teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening can be performed on anyone over the age of 18 who is not satisfied with the color of their teeth. However, in order to perform teeth whitening treatment, the teeth should not have previously undergone treatments such as crowns, fillings, or laminates. In other words, if the teeth are in their natural state and have not been treated, bleaching can be performed.

If other treatments will also be applied to the patient besides teeth whitening, bleaching should be performed first to determine the brightest possible color of the tooth, and then the treatment can be performed, which will ensure a more harmonious color structure on all teeth. Additionally, before performing teeth whitening treatment, the patient should undergo scaling (removal of tartar) procedure.

What are teeth whitening methods?

  1. Mechanical-physical cleaning (tartar cleaning and polishing),
  2. Office type teeth whitening,
  3. Home teeth whitening,
  4. Combined teeth whitening,
  5. Single teeth whitening.

1. Physical Cleaning

Tartar on our teeth, plaque and discolouration caused by the consumption of colour-forming food are largely removed by mechanical tartar cleaning followed by polishing.

However, this method does not lighten the natural colour of our teeth. For this, we need to make use of agents applied on the tooth.

2. Office Type Teeth Whitening-Bleaching

Office type teeth whitening is a method applied by a physician in a clinical environment.

How long does office type teeth whitening take?

Depending on the type of material used and the physician's preference, the application may take between 40 and 90 minutes. The treatment can be completed in a single day or can be applied in sessions.

How is office type teeth whitening done?

Firstly, a barrier is applied around the teeth to protect the patient's soft tissues and gums.

Then, the selected whitening agent is applied on the teeth and waited for the recommended time. Meanwhile, the teeth are illuminated with the device. The application time and sessions will be decided by your dentist according to the condition of your teeth and the material. In general, the procedure is completed in 2 sessions.

3. Home Whitening

In the home-type teeth whitening method, your doctor will first take measurements from your mouth and prepare suitable plaques for you. Every day, you will put medicine into these plaques and keep these plaques in your mouth for about 4-6 hours and perform the application. You need to repeat this process every day for an average of 8-10 days.

4. Combined Type Whitening

After whitening in the office environment, home whitening can also be used for better whitening and consolidation. The treatment application using these two types of applications is called combined teeth whitening.

5. Single Teeth Whitening

Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment may become discoloured over time. In such discolourations, the tooth is drained up to the mouth of the canal and medication is applied into the tooth. After a few sessions, the colour lightens.

Your dentist will decide which type of teeth whitening process will be suitable for you at the end of the examination.
